Marbella History – First Settlements
The history of Marbella is lost in the beginning of human settlements in the Iberian Peninsula, from the Paleolithic. As was common in the area, the benign climate and access to the sea made it possible that there were practically always human populations in that location.
The first advanced community of which they have references is of Phoenician presence, although there is no record of a great settlement. If the existence of a nucleus populated by the Roman civilization is proved, and although many were the infrastructures and roads of circulation that they constructed, it would still be necessary for the airport of Malaga and the facility of the transfer services to be operative; )
The later cultures that took root in Marbella run parallel to the common history of Spain, receiving inhabitants from the north of Europe until the later conquest of the Muslims.
Marbella History – Muslims
The growth of the population and the historical importance of Marbella were mainly due to the cultivation of figs as well as mulberries for the production of silk. It is speculated that the present name of the city comes from the Arab name Marbal-la which is inheritance of its original name, previous to the Muslim presence.
More than 700 years would last the Muslim presence in Marbella in which it is possible to emphasize the architecture and the agriculture as the main riches that the new Christian settlers acquired after the recon quest.
Marbella History – XVIIth to XIXth Century
The Christians continued with the lifting of notable buildings and notable spaces in the city such as the Plaza de los Naranjos, the Fort of San Luis and the churches of Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz and Calvario. Agriculture found a new source of wealth with the introduction of sugar cane in the mid-17th century.
Already in the early 19th century, Marbella was established as an important processing center for iron and wood from nearby farms. From a split of the population dedicated to agriculture was founded in 1860 the present neighboring town of San Pedro de Alcántara, date that coincides with the increase in importance of agricultural and fishery activities.
The decline of steelmaking as well as the crisis of production in traditional agriculture gave rise to a time of great difficulty for the people of Marbella.
Marbella History – Tourism
As a tourist resort, Marbella began its steps at the beginning of the 20th century with the opening of hotels like Commercial (1918), although this improvement meant for economic activity fell apart with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
Shortly after the end of the race, Marbella was once again considered a place of leisure and relaxation. By then, there was little time left for the establishment of the Marbella Airport and the consequent transfer services we provide today.
Soon Marbella became a center of attention for personalities and famous people, giving rise to the current luxury tourism.
The current facilities provided by Malaga Airport as well as the amount of infrastructure available for tourism have made this luxury destination accessible to the economy of many families who wish to spend their holidays in the Marbella area.
